"Everything returns to gray."
Abnormality Sighting #0005-N - Nickname: The Greyout
Risk to Users:
Safe
Abnormality Status:
Dormant
The Greyout is a rare visual event observed exclusively in Roblox clients prior to 2014. When triggered, every visible part within the game, including terrain, models, and user interface elements, becomes uniformly desaturated, adopting a dull, monochromatic grey tone. The skybox also shifts to an identical grey.
Witness accounts describe the effect as sudden and total, often occurring mid-session without any visible cause. Player avatars would retain their geometry, but their colors would be completely muted, giving them a lifeless, statue-like appearance. Ambient lighting would flatten entirely, removing shadows and highlights, creating the impression that the world had been “frozen” or drained of all vitality.
Due to its fleeting and unpredictable nature, the exact cause of the Greyout remains unknown. Some speculate it was the result of a rendering bug in the pre-2014 client’s lighting engine, while others claim it was tied to specific corrupted place files or legacy skyboxes.
